Poe Fun Fact Du Jour:
Did you know that the 19th Century French loved Edgar Allan Poe? Just loved him –practically claimed him as their own.
I have it on good authority (from a Poe-aficionado-Parisian-dweller-French-lit-major-budding-author-friend-of-mine, Rachel Kesselman) that this is indeed the case. That the poet Charles Pierre Baudelaire was obsessed with Poe, for example. He believed that Poe had given voice to his own very thoughts – in the very same words he thought them. Said Poe was basically a Frenchman trapped in the wrong body and shackled to the wrong country. Poor Poe! No wonder he wrote disturbing novels.
