Lyric Fest adapts to music-making during a time of pandemic with a new format: a powerful virtual song-movie entitled #SayTheirNames. Renowned soprano Karen Slack has developed a program to present songs and readings that hold up the women who have, wittingly or unwittingly, been a catalyst for social change, with Laura Ward at the piano. This program addresses four social movements that have been spearheaded by brave, sometimes forgotten women. The program will say their names in the story of emancipation, anti-lynching, civil rights, and #SayHerName movements. Featuring the premiere of a LF commissioned work by Jasmine Barnes, “Taking Names”, a setting of a new poem by Shana Oshiro, and will also feature the art of Lavett Ballard.
