John Dowell is an artist and master printmaker whose prints, paintings and photographs have been featured in more than 50 one person exhibitions. He is represented in the permanent collections of 70 museum and public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, France.
Dowell’s penetrating, super-imposed images of cotton and cotton fields have become central to his work. These have been culled and created from more than 18,000 photographs taken over the last decade. Through this body of work, and through his lens, Dowell confronts the ongoing struggle and injustice that African Americans face daily as a direct result of slavery.
